Flumendosa Basin (Italy)

Flumendosa Basin (Italy)

The Flumendosa basin is located in central-eastern Sardinia and Flumendosa is the second longest river of the region with a length of 127 km. The northern part of the basin is mountainous with steep hill slopes and higher rain compared to the southern part. Two large dams, the Flumendosa dam at Nuraghe Arrubiu (reservoir capacity of 300 × 106 m3) and the Mulargia dam at Monte Su Rei, (reservoir capacity of 320 × 106 m3), collect runoff from a basin area of 934 km2. Due to its key role in the Sardinian water resources system, the Flumendosa basin became an experimental basin of the University of Cagliari, resulting in an extensive hydrological database. Daily precipitation and temperature data from 31 weather stations in and surrounding the Flumendosa basin and monthly runoff data at the basin outlet were collected since 1923. A hydrometric station for discharge measurements at the Mulargia section (area of about 65 km2) of the basin has been installed in October 2020.
